"Autumn at Pendeen"

This is the second painting in my series called "The Old Man and The Sea."

Pendeen is situated on the North coast of Cornwall between St Ives and Lands End. There is a lighthouse and parking which is where I set up to paint this scene. This is a very rugged stretch of our Atlantic coastline and the scenery is just stunning. This oil painting  measures 60cm x 60cm and is on a 11.8 oz cotton canvas.

I have started by putting in  very moody and dramatic background base colours.  I was not too worried about getting the shapes perfect as I can always adjust this later on in the process. I have then added some definition to the sea and to the cliffs. For the sea I have used Prussian Blue, Pthalo Green and Turquoise. For the cliffs I have used Payne's Grey, Yellow Ochre, Raw Umber and Olive Green.

There is no quick way to paint the sea in order to achieve the effect that I would like, so this is the second layer which allows me to shape as I go. It will still need shadow and more detailed wave definition. I am not satisfied with the shape of the cliffs at this time but I will spend the next session adding more definition to the coastline.

The sound of the sea, that swell thundering in on the rocks below, together with the subsequent spray that rises up is an exhilarating experience. This view can be so different depending on the conditions. In the summer and on a calm day, the sea here is a beautiful and clear azure blue, and the clarity of the water can be amazing.

Not quite today though.
